The Land of Little Rain, by Mary Hunter Austin. NONFICTION. Download site: MobileRead. Format: .PRC for Kindle. Price: FREE.
"Mary Hunter Austin was born on September 9, 1868 in Carlinville, Illinois (the fourth of six children) to George and Susannah (Graham) Hunter. She graduated from Blackburn College in 1888. For 17 years she made a special study of Indian life in the Mojave Desert, and her publications set forth the intimate knowledge she thus acquired. She was a prolific novelist, poet, critic, and playwright, as well as an early feminist and defender of Native American and Spanish-American rights. She is best known for her tribute to the deserts of the American Southwest, The Land of Little Rain." - MobileRead.

Beyond the Door, by Philip K. Dick. First published in Fantastic Universe (January 1954). FANTASY. Download site: MobileRead. Format: .PRC for Kindle. Price: FREE.
The original blurb: "Did you ever wonder at the lonely life the bird in a cuckoo clock has to lead - that it might possibly love and hate just as easily as a real animal of flesh and blood? Philip Dick used that idea for this brief fantasy tale. We’re sure that after reading it you’ll give cuckoo clocks more respect."

The Defenders, by Philip K. Dick. SCIENCE FICTION. Download site: MobileRead. Format: .PRC for Kindle. Price: FREE.
First published in Galaxy Science Fiction, January 1953. No weapon has ever been frightful enough to put a stop to war - perhaps because we never before had any that thought for themselves!

"A highly exciting adventure story featuring James Schuyler Grim, better known as Jimgrim. Jimgrim is an American secret service agent employed by the British and stationed in Jerusalem. With him are his faithful sikh shadow, an American and an ex-soldier of the Australian forces, all eager for a fight of any kind. This opportunity soon presents itself, as the ambitions of the French in Syria arouse the enmity of King Feisal of the Arabs. For his aid in WWI, the Allies promised Feisal the kingship of Syria, Palestine and Trans-Jordania. This promise they have not kept, however, and the French are out to discredit or kill the Arab chieftain. To further their ends, an order is forged, ostensibly from Feisal to his Arab adherents, which calls for a massacre of the Jews in Jerusalem." - Amazon.
